Happy New Year!
Calling 2020 a year of upheaval is an understatement. For me, it revealed the true colors of the people I consider friends and acquaintances. A very old, kind man once told me, "If you can count on one hand the people who will be there through thick and thin, you’re very fortunate." Think about it—how many of your “friends” would jump into the mess with you and laugh the whole way out?
This year taught me a lot about myself and others. What truly matters? Do you care enough about others to make sacrifices? Are you free of racist thoughts and actions? Where do you draw the line on decency for leaders? Do you really need dining out and vacations to feel happy? These were just some of the questions raised this year, and I’m glad they came up. Sometimes, the pot just needs stirring.
Feeling let down by some and pleasantly surprised by others, I find myself reflecting the most on who I am. What kind of person do I want to be? Who do I want around me? And what is my purpose here?
My answer to why I’m here has always been to serve, love, and help others on their journey through this dimension. Just as Christ needed followers and Judas, we need the people who come in and out of our lives, for better or for worse.
2020, thank you. I entered the year with questions, lost my way more than once, cried harder than ever before, felt anger and sadness, yet emerged with a renewed faith in God, in humanity, and a deeper appreciation for the gift of life.
Thanks to everyone who played a part in my life this year, in any way—you are what life is all about. Many blessings to you all!
And yes, I feel truly fortunate!
