This book was fascinating and opened my eyes to a hidden world I knew nothing about. I’m not sure how I discovered it, but I’m glad I did. It is definitely worth reading. The author skillfully intertwines the two narratives, creating a cohesive story from the very first page. Johnson captures your attention and maintains it until the very end.
Intermixing two different worlds in two different times,The Feather Thief is a true-crime book by Kirk Wallace Johnson. It tells the story of the 2009 theft of rare bird specimens from the British Natural History Museum by Edwin Rist, a young American flautist and avid fly-tier.
The book explores the world of Victorian feather collecting, the obsession with rare feathers in the fly-tying community, and the consequences of the heist for science and conservation. Johnson weaves together history, natural science, and a detective narrative to examine the allure of obsession and the impact of one crime on the scientific community.
I took great liberties when designing this book nook. It was an absolute joy to create. The interior is quite different from the actual museum, which I found to be a bit dull. The blue and red lights represent the police arriving, which they did, but the following day, they came without their lights.
When displayed among books, the booknook becomes a source of inspiration and invites curiosity and wonder from all who pass by.
Materials used in construction include UV resin, glow-in-the-dark tape, paperboard, wood, dried goat's rue stalks, jewelry findings, and LEDs powered by two CR 2032 3V batteries located in the hinged roof section of the book nook.
The interior of the book nook features sections that glow in the dark when the lights are turned off.
Booknook measurements: Height 11.5 - 9.5" in height, 5.5 inches wide and 8.5 inches in depth.
Included with the booknook is the paperback edition (8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches) of "The Feather Thief" by Kirk Wallace Johnson, which slides into the right side of the booknook. This allows the booknook and book to fit seamlessly into a bookshelf.
This item is designed to be a keepsake and night light, not a toy. Please keep it out of reach of children under twelve (12) years old. While the small parts are glued into the diorama, they can be removed with enough pressure or the appropriate tool.
I created the entire diorama on my own, following my own journey of discovery.
The price includes priority mail shipping.
NOTE: The cover photograph, the booknook is the original picture I took on my bookshelf, the background is AI generated to show a larger bookshelf. The booknook is not generated, just the weird little dragon thing on the left.
